44th Cobh International Deep Sea Angling Festival 6th - 10th Sept 2010
Cobh SAC are hosting the annual International Deep Sea Angling Festival in Cobh and this will be the 44th year that we have hosted such an event.
This is an ideal fishing break which combines competitive angling with great craic. There is a very strong international flavour with anglers and teams coming from Holland, Germany, Belgium, England, Scotland, and Wales. Many of these anglers have been coming back year after year.
The craic and banter during the week is excellent as is the fishing no matter what weather conditions prevail. By way of example, in August 2008 we hosted the EFSA European Line Class & Boat Championships. On the first day the weather was atrocious with driving rain and high winds. Despite this, though, all competitors were able to fish in comfort in the confines of Cork Harbour. Not only that, but the fishing was quite good. There were 1,026 fish landed between 180 anglers with a total of 17 different species. Now that’s impressive! Over the next four days the weather allowed fishing over the many famous reefs outside the Harbour. A further 5,687 fish were landed and a further 6 species were recorded. Many of these were good quality conger, ling, pollack, etc.,… in amongst that were also 58 cod, many of a good size.
With fishing like this it would be well worth your while to book a place for yourself, or for a group of you to fish as a team. Rest assured you will have a week that you won’t forget and I’m quite sure that the competition will become a regular feature of your fixtures list.
The conservation and scoring system for the 2009 event was as follows:
This is how it works - Each boat will carry a fishing steward, weighing scales and measuring stick. The steward will weigh the fish caught by the Anglers. After recording the fish, the angler may retain or return the fish to the sea. Mackerel and shark are excluded.
- 100 points allocated for Common Skate
- Possible specimen fish and any species that are too large to weigh on board will be brought back to the check-in area for recording.
- The competition will be decided on a point allocated system
- Ten points per Kilogram of fish weighed, five points per fish recorded
- Ten points per lesser spotted dogfish
- Lesser spotted dogfish will not be weighed but will be recorded
- In the event of a tie, the greater number of fish will decide the winner
Angling information
In 2009, a half days drifting formed part of the competition. The choice of which day was at the discretion of the committee and permitting weather conditions. One box of live rag worm was supplied to each angler for this session. No other live bait was permitted on the other three days of the competition.
An open day was held on Wednesday 2nd September subject to numbers. For those wishing to fish, the cost for 2009 was €65.00 for seniors and €30.00 for juveniles
Boat Draw
A draw for boats will be made by organizing committee prior to the competition. Competitors will draw their position on the boat each day. Boat positions will change at the mid-day point of each day by each angler moving 3 spaces to his right in accordance with all major I.F.S.A championships.
